I am not talking about the temperature outside, which certainly does not need to go down anymore. Family law cases often involve a lot of emotion, anger, and disagreements that turn personal.
One of our most important jobs as attorneys is to turn the temperature down, while at the same time, continue being good advocates for our clients. Passing on nasty personal accusations and name calling to the other attorney is unprofessional and only makes matters worse. Rude and nasty lawyers are sometimes shown on tv, and some people think that being nasty is good lawyering.
In the real world, nasty only makes judges mad, makes it harder to work out an agreement with the other side, and creates more conflict and expense for everyone. The old saying that you get more bees with honey than with vinegar, is absolutely true in family law.
