A nurse I know recently retired after decades of kind and devoted service. She barely had time to enjoy her well-deserved break when she want back to work administering Covid vaccines. She returned because her neighbor had died from Covid, and she felt that she needed to do everything she could to prevent others from suffering from the disease. Across the country are thousands of other unsung heros like her, coming back from retirement, or putting themselves at risk working before they were vaccinated caring for Covid patients, selling our groceries, and other essential functions. They fought a disease that has killed more Americans than every enemy we have fought in a war since 1900, while also battling denial and indifference from too many of their fellow Americans. There are no fireworks for them, no parades, no medals, but, they are the true heroes of our age.
