It is easy to take the good things in life for granted, until you lose them, and then you realize how important they were. Most of us in this country have taken for granted the rule of law and stable transfers of power following elections. Elections happen, we may back one candidate or another, but, regardless of the result life and work goes on. We take for granted resolving our political and legal disagreements peacefully, through the political process, and the courts. I have been to places where the rule of law is not respected, where those who cannot win an election use violence to try to force their will, trust me, you do not want to live there. Today for the first time in modern history, we saw actual violence used to try to influence the transfer of power in this country, what Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell called an ‘insurrection’. Hopefully this is the last time we see this happen, we do not want our children to live in a country where they look back fondly to a time when we respected the rule of law, and transferred power peacefully.
