That was the title of a book written in the 1930s about a Nazi style takeover in this country. People assumed that something like that could never happen here, and it did.
Most of us who have lead fairly sheltered lives take certain things for granted, the rule of law, government that we may not like, but that does not prosecute us for made up crimes because they do not like us, the right to speak our minds without getting in trouble for it.
Unfortunately, we cannot take those things for granted. If we are not vigilant, the rule of law, and the basic freedom to criticize our leaders without fear of being punnished can go away. That has happened in a small city in Northern Minnesota, Crosby. The former mayor spoke out against the leadership of the police department. To silence him, the department leaders arrested him for bogus charges, and had him prosecuted for over two years. He was acquitted of all charges, but the individuals responsible have so far not suffered any consequences. Other citizens in Crosby have also been punnished for speaking out, while those who supported the department leadership were not punnished when they commmitted crimes.
No matter what our political views are, we all need to support the right of citizens to criticize their government and speak out. If we do not do that, it can and will happen here.
