The downside of social media

Almost everyone these days is on some type of social media, Facebook and similar sites. Social media can be great for keeping everyone up to date, sharing news about your family, trips, etc. But, it also has some pretty serious downsides.

I have seen many people sharing things on the internet that should probably be kept to themselves. This can be a real problem when you get into a legal dispute. They used to call the internet the World Wide Web. The term is still accurate, what you post on line is available world wide, to everyone. I was cross examing the opposing party once, using pictures she had posted on Facebook. She asked me how I got them, I just said 'World Wide Web'. I think she did not realize that what you put on the internet can be seen by everyone. If you are in any type of legal dispute, do not post anything, or send any message that you would not want the judge to read. The picture of you slamming a bubba mug full of Keystone Lite, or dancing at a bar with some of your clothes off, or the nasty text message where you tell your ex what you really think about their new significant other is probably not going to help your custody case. The old saying the less said the better is more true than ever.
